Trauma is identified as the response to a distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual's capacity to cope. Although traumatic events are encountered by many at some point in their lives, responses vary; one may experience trauma from the event itself and from the negative emotions it provokes. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly characterized by persistent and distressing memories of a traumatic event, negative or irrational thoughts, mood fluctuations, feelings of despair, panic attacks, sleep disruptions, nightmares, daydreams, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, behavioral changes, and sometimes aggressive behavior. Physically, PTSD may manifest as eating disorders, nausea, chronic pain, hypervigilance, tension headaches, substance abuse, and cardiovascular or digestive issues. To manage the distressing symptoms of PTSD, one might attempt to suppress negative memories or combat these emotions. Yet, this avoidance can inadvertently perpetuate and exacerbate the symptoms. Psychological trauma may result from exposure to events perceived as physically or emotionally harmful, such as: - Sexual assault - Trauma from childbirth or childhood - Bullying and harassment - Natural disasters - War or acts of terrorism - Domestic violence, including emotional or physical abuse - Observing violence or criminal acts - Life-threatening illnesses or the death of a loved one - Accidents or injuries
